Sounds like you're getting it. You're asking the right questions. Let me make some rule clarifications based on your comments.

First, I'm going to call the 3 piles to be deciphered Deck 3, Deck 2, Deck 1, to correspond with the number of deciphered cards required for the "phrase."

I like it. I'll change it to read this way, too.

As I understand it, we slide the top card (I'll call it the "slider") down letter-by-letter until the hidden card's title is completely revealed. That revealed ("deciphered) title card is then placed beside that deck until the required number of cards for a "phrase" (3, 2, or 1)

The "slider" card is placed aside. This makes the next card that you just 'revealed' to be the new slider, and so on. This makes the motion of slide/revealing always a discovery/mystery, and very fluid if you're working on a long phrase.

When the phrase is fully deciphered, the player who completed it takes the slider card from that deck into his discard pile (to be shuffled and drawn as needed for our 3-card hand to begin each turn.)

When the phrase is fully deciphered, the play takes all previous slider cards that have been set aside. In the case of the three-card phrase it would be all three slider cards. In the case of "Deck 1" (pawn, court, and The Excuse Deck) you would just collect the slider card each time you successfully decipher a one-card phrase.

If a phrase is partly deciphered, say only 2 of the 3 required cards are beside Deck 3, it is possible that the opponent may be able to claim the cards by finishing the reveal of the 3rd. Is this correct? So player A might have revealed 3 of the four letters of the card's title, for example, but he has no cards left in his hand and his turn is over. Now Player B, on his turn, could reveal the final letter, and thus claim the phrase card(s) next to the deck. Is this correct?

That is all correct.

I don't quite understand that "overshoot the phrase" business. If we play a 3, for example, but there are only 2 unrevealed letters on a card we're working on, what card(s) does the opponent get? Just the card that was overshot, or that card plus any other phrase cards which are next to that deck?

If you 'overshoot the phrase' by any amount, all the cards that were set aside for that phrase go to your opponent's discard. For the case of Deck 1, it would just be the current slider card. For the case of Deck 3 it would be all three slider cards.

Over on the BGG forum you suggested examples of play. I'll add them here.

Thanks again.

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Decktetta Stone

When I first read the rule for primary scoring, I was unclear whether it compared the quantity of cards or the ranks of cards. But it's just the quantity of cards, right?

So it seems like card ranks only matter for the tiebreaker, which (as you note) doesn't really extend the strategic space of the game. Are ties common enough that there even needs to be a tiebreaker? If there does, you could just say that if there is a tie on points then the winner is the player who won the top-most Ace. If there was a tie on that Ace, then the player who won the second-highest Ace. And so on.

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Granicus

We noticed a few things while playing this that were unclear in the rules:

1. What happens if a player ends with suit chips for suits that only have an Ace, no other cards?

2. We often ended play with players having uneven amounts of suit chips. If you have players A, B, C, and D, and player B ends the round by placing the last card and taking a chip, players A and B have one more chip each than players C and D. Is this by design?

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Moco!

I'm now working on an idea about designing an 2-players area-control game, which is mostly inspired by the famous Twilight Struggle.
All the location cards and Aces will be used to form the map. Other cards will be used to control these locations. For example, play a card from you hand, and then add a token to a location whcih shares a same suit with it.
All the locations sharing the same suit make up an area, while the Excuse performs as a special area——then there will be 7 areas in total——and the goal of the game is to control more areas than your opponent.
In addition, there might be some special locations, such as the three double-type cards and the three triple-suit cards. But I don't want to add any extra texts one cards (or it'll be difficult to play the game by original Decktet cards), so there won't be something like the Events in TS.
It's still an idea, and I haven't began writing the rules yet. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

That's all, apologize for my poor English, and I hope I have made myself clear.

Forum category: The Decktet / Game Design
Forum thread: Having an idea about an area-control game

Specifically, Friends of the Chief are scored by both players, but only in the hand, not the bhargage; bhargs can be scored during play of the cards; 23 is not scored in hand or bhargage; and the points for more than one suit of shortage are increased.

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Bhargage

I played it tonight (playing solo, right-hand vs. left-hand) and enjoyed it very much. It incorporates so much of the Decktet: the suits, values, and type. If you pay attention to the names of the cards, you can bring in some fun storytelling.

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Turn of Fate

The set-up is the same as the two-player game, except that the automa opponent doesn't use any tokens. You take all the turns. When you roll a 10 you collect tokens on your three crowns as usual but the automa opponent doesn't.

When you sell a card to gain more tokens, instead of discarding it, you play it as a developed property on your opponent's side. You can choose which district to play it on, but it must match suit as in the regular game. You'll want to put most of the cards in one district and write that one off as a loss, but sometimes the suits won't let you.

If you want to sell a card that can't be placed with either suit you may discard it.

You only run through the deck once since there are no (or very few) discards. Scoring is the same as usual.

To make the game harder:
If one of the suits on your discard is one of your automa opponent's crown suits, you must place it using that suit if possible. If not, you can place it using the other suit. This mimics the two-player game where your opponent is more likely to be able play cards with suits from their crown cards. It makes the game more difficult because it limits where you can play the opponent's cards.

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Magnate

It is easier to pick up new games when you have experience with other games, as game mechanics tend to show patterns between different games. This game has similarities to Settlers of Catan, but also Machi Koro, in that dice decide which cards create wealth in this round. The goal of the game is something which can be described as "majority rule", as not the total value of your cards is counted but the majority at each plot. Think best-of-five match. A game classic using this condition is El Grande.

These are the core elements of the game. You may be able to work out the rules with these elements in mind. It is hard to start on rules if you have no idea what the game is about.

Taxation is used to deter players from hoarding goods (otherwise playing deeds were inefficient).

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Magnate

Although having red correspond to both Suns and Leaves was originally an adaptation to the rainbow pyramid set, it works better in the game than having six different colours. Of course, you can use orange if you prefer. But, to me, red is more naturally between orange and brown.

For moons, white might look better.

You can also use another colour to keep score. Beyond that, I’m open to suggestions!

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Ziggurat Demolition Throwdown

Now that Pyramid Arcade makes xeno colors readily available, would you recommend any variation to players with equal access to these ten colors of pyramid?

If we're just swapping colors to more closely match the Decktet suits, we could use orange for 1-pip/Suns/Leaves, and white for defense/Moons, leaving yellow, green, and blue alone. It might give the game a distinctive appearance by not using the same default colors as other pyramid games.

But maybe there's a way to use extra colors for a more fun game, too?

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Ziggurat Demolition Throwdown

Well, I guess I'm REALLY late to this dance! But I just recently dived into the Decktet world, and even more recently tried my hand at Emu ranching. My wife and I played it for the first time last night and had a blast. I just wanted to kinda double check something…

Am I correct in understanding that playing an Ace or a Crown on a previously established bird effectively closes off any further play on that bird?

As I indicated, we only have a few hands of playing experience, so I haven't yet worked out the best strategies (i.e. starting most birds with either an Ace or a Crown hoping to get the 5 point bonus) but it seems like a game with a lot of replayability.

Thanks for your hard work.

Forum category: News / New Games
Forum thread: Emu ranchers

Magi is inspired by the playing card solitaire game "Oracle Patience". It is called Magi after the three wise men of the biblical narrative which here represent the three powers of man that battle for dominance - Intelligence, Emotion, and Instinct. These powers, or Magi, are represented by three Personality cards that contain between themselves all suits of the Decktet, the Lunatic corresponding to the mind, the Painter corresponding to the sentiments, and the Savage corresponding to the body. These personalities are arranged as the three corners of a triangle and courts are built around them by placing a card at each of their four sides as they are upturned from the pack. The upper card in each court is immovable; the three others are moveable meaning that they can capture and be captured.

Upturned cards are first played to contribute to a court with a corresponding suit if space is available. If the card corresponds to multiple Magi, it is placed at the court corresponding to the highest available suit in the depicted arrangement. A court is completed when all four sides of a Magi card have been occupied.

If a card containing one of the suits of a Magi with a completed court is turned up, and it cannot be previously be played as part of a court, it activates the power of the corresponding Magi. If the card corresponds to multiple completed courts, priority is given to the highest listed suit first.

Once the power of a Magi card is activated, the upturned card may be used to capture a card of the same value from another court. Both cards are then placed on top of the stack above the corresponding Magi card. If no capture is available, the card is similarly placed on top of the corresponding stack. Additionally, the three movable cards of the court of the activated Magi card may also capture cards of their value from other courts - one stack each. These cards are placed beneath their captors and may be recaptured as a set. If no cards of a similar value are available for capture by the three movable court cards, then nothing happens and another card is upturned from the deck.

Gameplay proceeds in this manner until the deck is depleted. The Magi card surrounded by the highest total value of cards represents the power that is dominant in the player during the gameplay session. Aces=1, Pawns=10, Courts=11, and Crowns=12. Numbered cards are valued accordingly. The Excuse is not used in this game.

(This game is still being tested)

Forum category: News / New Games
Forum thread: New Game: Magi (Solitaire)

Hmm… As I read the English phrase "at least one matching each of the three suits", it's ambiguous between requiring three tokens (one for each suit) or one tri-coloured token. That's the grammar of it. Since tokens only represent one suit each, context fixes it to mean three tokens.

Maybe I'll take a crack at rewording it.

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Magnate

As for whether you are forced to meld: My hunch is that the original design makes them optional. This is obviously a variable you can adjust to vary the difficulty.

Regarding the Courts: There was a time in the distant past before there were Court cards.
So, if there is a meld in my hand, do I HAVE to put it in the meld archive? If yes, do I have to put all possible cards in it?

Real life situation: say it's phase two, and I got four Crowns in my hand, and one of them is the Crown of Waves. But I know the 9 and 8 of Waves are coming next draw. Can I keep the Crown of Waves out of the meld? I can also imagine a situation where one would prefer not to make a meld in phase 1, in order to perhaps put the cards in a more effective order and discard them.

Also, the rules for the extended deck don't mention Courts, but they're there, right? Just like Pawns? I saw a 41 card deck somewhere… were the Courts previously not in the extended deck?

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Head Solitaire

While Pawns and Courts are versatile, the Crown is rather weak in comparison, as it can be a total dud in a fight, and in itself hard to obtain. At the moment I try to avoid all Crowns in the first round, even if it means forfeiting a fight. This seems to narrow down the strategy for me.

Do you feel it might be worthwhile to give the Crown a boost?

Forum category: Special / Per page discussions
Forum thread: Tinker, Sailor, Soldier, Spy

There's a section of the sidebar for "Languages besides English". The first of those was set up by Jorge, who started the wiki. The Spanish link (which he set up) is a list of all the pages that are in Spanish. Other languages have been added as contributors have come along.

The French link is to a welcome page that lists all the games with French rules at the bottom.

The German one links to a welcome page that doesn't have such a list. Following the pattern for the French welcome page, something like:

[[module ListPages category="de-game" order="titleAsc" ]] * %%linked_title%% [[/module]]

I'm not opposed to something more thorough, but I don't really know much about it. Would changing it so that translated games were child pages require moving all of the game pages?

Forum category: General Discussion / About the site
Forum thread: Translation

I have looked around the docs and there doesn't seem an obvious way to list possible translation in an automated way. Translations are so few and far between that some signal should be hoisted where they actually exist. I would not edit a URL manually to see if a translation exists.

One possibility would be to use the site structure features of Wikidot. Translations could be played as children of the original articles. A game page skeleton would include the names of its children.

Forum category: General Discussion / About the site
Forum thread: Translation

I may want to write a German translation of the rules but I'd like to have the theme relate to the fairy tale Sechse kommen durch die ganze Welt, which has the same "find your merry band and go adventuring" theme as the Hobbit. The rules as they are still seem a bit ambiguous to me (for instance, outside of the example I haven't seen that suit chips only count towards achieving if they are in one of the target's colours), and I might give them a different wording while keeping the game intact.

Forum category: News / New Games
Forum thread: New Game: Tinker, Sailor, Soldier, Spy

Thanks for making them.

Forum category: News / New Games
Forum thread: New Game: Tinker, Sailor, Soldier, Spy

I've taken a look at the rules, and I think I understand how it goes. I like that you've managed to work a theme into it.

I haven't played Friday. In fact, I only heard of it because Mike Hostetler posted a Decktet adaptation over at BGG. He calls his "Thursday". His is a themeless card-pushing solitaire. The mechanisms are also surprisingly different, given the similar starting place.

Forum category: News / New Games
Forum thread: New Game: Tinker, Sailor, Soldier, Spy

I'm trying to make a solitaire game. In my mind it's like the hobbit, a wizard has chosen you a tinker (the Excuse) and 3 partners to travel to all the location cards. I've only won the game once, but have played it several times. Still working out the kinks and I'm a little afraid that it might be easily solvable. I've never hard to write out game instructions or draw diagrams for a game before so I think the wiki page for it might be a mess right now. I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts on if they can even understand the instructions enough to be able to play it.

Forum category: News / New Games
Forum thread: New Game: Tinker, Sailor, Soldier, Spy
